Storage Tips & Tricks

Before moving items into your unit, take time to sort and organize what you’re storing. Donate or discard items you no longer need—it will save space and money.

Estimate how much space you’ll need by measuring large items and using a unit size guide. This helps you avoid paying for more space than necessary.

Invest in sturdy boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, and strong tape. Label boxes clearly on multiple sides so you can find things easily later.

  • Place heavier items on the bottom and lighter items on top.
  • Keep frequently used items near the front of your unit.
  • Use wardrobes, shelves, or drawers to store smaller items inside.

Take apart bed frames, tables, and shelves when possible. Store screws and small parts in labeled bags and tape them to the item they belong to for easy reassembly.

Use climate-controlled storage for items that are sensitive to temperature changes, such as:
  • Electronics
  • Wood furniture
  • Leather goods
  • Artwork
  • Photographs

Leave pathways between stacked items so you can walk into your unit easily without having to move everything around to find what you need.

Stack boxes with the strongest bottoms up and avoid stacking too high—especially with heavy items—to prevent crushing or falling.

Use protective covers on furniture and keep boxes off the floor using pallets or shelving. This protects your belongings from moisture and improves air circulation.

Keep a detailed list of everything in your unit. This makes it easy to locate items later and track what you’ve stored.

Check on your items periodically. This helps you reorganize if needed and ensure items are in good condition throughout your rental.
